“Winter is here, best time of year, come on along sing a skating song…”
One of my fondest childhood memories was ice-skating on a small rink my best friend’s dad built for us in her backyard. Round and round we would soar feeling the chill of the air on our cheeks. Not an iPhone or computer in sight. This year, to kick off the holiday season, I took my two sons to an ice rink near to us which overlooks the Long Island sound. They enjoyed two hours of skating until they could stand no more. Finally in physical defeat rather than want, they staggered off the ice with tired smiles and wobbly legs proclaiming “That was SO much fun…”

What a lovely memory for them – and for me! Brought back times of finding a frozen pond with my sister in the acres behind our house, and skating until we were numb or the winter light had faded. Thank you!

This post put a smile on my face. I think these simple pleasures, which we sometimes ignore, are life.

I have so many happy memories of outdoor rinks also! Luckily, our kids grew up in a town that also had one, so they share those memories as well. I still seek out an open-air rink, even when I travel! (Found one in Tallinn, Estonia, a few years ago and it was the most fun thing I did!)

Awesome! I can’t wait for some more cold weather here in MN so I can flood the backyard rink I built for my kids. Maybe (fingers crossed) we will be able to skate before Christmas.
